Intravital research focuses on biological processes in live multicellular organisms ranging from nematodes to human beings. Recently, this field has advanced considerably thanks to the development of intravital microscopy. This technology has made possible to image in real time several phenomena ranging from the dynamics of tissue response under various physiological and pathological conditions to
the dynamics of subcellular structures. Intravital microscopy has opened the door to a new era in which basic scientific questions in fields such as neuroscience, immunology, tumor biology, signaling, and cell biology can be addressed under physiological conditions. In addition, its application has extended into pre-clinical settings and it will soon become a powerful tool for diagnostic imaging.
